Strangulation in
Intimate Partner Violence
Strangulation is the ultimate form of power and control in which the abuser can demonstrate control over the victim’s next breath – it may have devastating psychological and physical effects and has the potential for a fatal outcome.
The odds of a victim being killed by their abuser increases 750% for victims who have previously been strangled.
Some physical injuries may not be external and may not be obvious, but can still be quite serious with long-term health impacts. It is critical for anyone who has been the victim of a non-fatal strangulation to receive a medical examination, even if it has been several days since the attack.
