Residential Programs – Emergency Shelter
To connect with our Emergency Shelter, call our 24-hour Hotline at (908) 355-HELP (4357)
What to expect when you call the 24/7 Hotline to ask about emergency shelter:
Trained domestic violence advocates answer the 24/7 Hotline, and when you call the Hotline and ask about emergency shelter, you will be speaking with a supportive and non-judgmental advocate. You don’t need to know for sure you want to go into shelter and you don’t even need to know for sure if you are a victim of domestic violence. You can ask questions to help you figure out what you need and to help you better understand your own situation. You will be asked if you are in a safe space to speak – meaning you’re not in any immediate physical danger and that you have privacy to talk away from the person who has caused you harm. And if you do want to go into shelter, the advocate will ask you a series of screening questions including questions about the abuse and your current living situation.
These questions are to help the advocates assess and prioritize the shelter spaces available.
Supportive Housing
Survivors and their children are provided with an apartment, offering them a longer term stable and safe living environment after they leave emergency shelter affording them additional time to build self-sufficiency and independence. It offers necessary resources such as case management, life skills training, and emotional support, which are crucial for survivors to regain independence, heal from trauma, and create a future free from violence.
Housing Navigator
The Housing Navigator works directly with clients and alongside their domestic violence advocates to address clients needs upon entry to the program. The Navigator helps clients identify housing, eliminate housing barriers, and develops relationships with landlords, realtors and community partners. The Housing Navigator has limited funds available to assist with security deposits, assistance with back rent, securing storage spaces and providing household items such as pots and bedding.
